What a lovely thing to do on a day off work, popping into the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne. I didn’t have any reason or plans, just the sun was shining and I was driving past.

With camera in tow I enjoyed strolling its gardens and am always delighted with every turn of the path.

I do enjoy the architecture of the Heide. In 1934 the Heide supported a collection of some of Australia’s best know modernist painters such as Albert Tucker and Sidney Nolan. However when is was rebuilt between 1964-67 it was considered to be one the finest examples of mid-century modernist architecture in Victoria. Further extensions occurred in 1993, 2005 and 2009.

The 15 acres was originally a dairy farm and the gardens were started by the founder John and Sunday Reed in 1934. What now exists is 50 years of hard work to create this dense vegetation and flora which is now a sculpture park.

As well as its own collection of modernist art curated over 50 years since the Reeds commenced the gallery, the Heide features several exhibitions through-out the year of modern artist artworks. I will save that story for my next post!

ALWAYS THE ARTIST
