The marine ecological community, formed by underwater forests of Giant Kelp was once common in the coastal waters of southeast Australia. This included around Tasmania across Bass Strait up to Victoria, eastern South Australia and southern New South Wales. But after significant declines in recent decades, remnant fragments of Giant Kelp forests are now only found in Tasmania. These areas form the priority place for focus under the Threatened Species Action Plan. (Source: Dept of Climate Change, Australia)
